Immigration Officer:          You are being joined by queenbee.

Zola:      ....and then we have Markus, of cource...?:)

Markus:                I am Mark Arnold, retired teacher....and I am trying to provide leadership inspiration for the IEA

Markus:                Hi Margaret

queenbee:          hi all sorry for being late

Rich:      Hi Margaret

Markus:                that's fine...we are glad you made it....and just in time for your turn at an intro

"Rafael":              ok lets continue

Markus:                we just did our intro Margaret

queenbee:          want one from me?

Markus:                (to queenbee) please

queenbee:          Hi I am Margaret Corbit, I work at the supercomputing center at Cornell Univ, US. I do outreach using VWs and focus on science and technology.

queenbee:          I am running a Uni with worlds that link college students with teams of science fair exhibit builders at remote schools. I have a model for the program called SciFair.

Markus:                (to queenbee) I think you know everyone....Rafael Cecconello from córdoba, argentina and a leader in this organization www.universia.net

Markus:                Glad you could come Margaret

Markus:                Several people are planning to be involved with planning as they can make it in....as always it is hard to get an international group to find a suitable time to all meet, and most of us have very busy schedules

Markus:                We will post chats from these meeting. Also, I will post chats I have with individuals or email exchanges that relate to this effort. Lastly, we will have a discussion forum posted on the website later this week

"Rafael":              ok

Markus:                I would like to start, before heading on to the agenda items, by asking if their are initial questions about this effort.

Markus:                *there

"Rafael":              no

Markus:                Margaret, Mark?

MarkofEU:           Not yet!

Markus:                if not then I will give a brief statement of goals we have talked about to date regarding the IEA

Markus:                it is quite simple actually...

Markus:                The primary purpose is to bring together educational institutions to form a network in which creative intercultural collaborations can take place..

Markus:                ...a gathering and organizational structure that will help promote these intercultural collaboration, and a system for generating support to pursue initiatives within the group.

Markus:                ...that is the general overview

Markus:                questions?

Rich:      thanks Markus

queenbee:          do you plan a specific focus on digital communication, virtual worlds?

"Rafael":              i understand Mark, how institutions present their initiatives to IEA

"Rafael":              ?

"Rafael":              do you think that language will be a problem for this project?

Rich:      let me know if you want some help fielding these

Markus:                Margaret > I feel that the IEA should focus on helping to facilitate collaborations between institutions (as a primary focus) regardless of technology or collaborative tools, but I would like to think this is a rich tool to try and inspire use of

Rich:      I think language is always going to be a problem Rafael

Rich:      although there has been some talk of translation tools

Markus:                before I get to your question Rafael...I would like to say I am hoping that all of the leaders that we involve will help shape the goals and means for reaching those goals

Rich:      It would be interesting to foster collaborations amongst groups such as Spanish speaking institutions and other groups as well as just English speaking

Markus:                I also think that this issue of overcoming language barriers is part of this effort

Markus:                As leaders how will we better enable intercultural education collaborations....?

Rich:      by having bilingual members of the leadership able to take the lead and coordinate efforts ?

Markus:                Rafael > as far as how will institutions propose initiative?  We will plan to develop a proposal submission process as part of the website and as part of the agenda in leadership meetings

"Rafael":              yes rich

"Rafael":              ok mark

Markus:                ...plus we will convey proposals to network members

Markus:                Again...I think a proper function for the IEA is to help build the network and then to find means for supporting the goals and initiatives of the network.

Markus:                The larger the network grows...the more likely it is to generate support for member initiatives I would think.

"Rafael":              to accomplish these goals mark we have in short time we have to contact existing networks like, educause, universia and others

queenbee:          yes, I was wondering what the relationship would be with something like educause?

Markus:                Right...I have a large invite list already established for the Summit....I will send those invites out next Monday.....

Markus:                I was waiting to ask today for input on groups that you might feel are essential to contact about this effort.

Rich:      I would imagine that each entity would strengthen the other by cooperation and as such these organizations need to be invited to participate at every opportunity

Markus:                There are several organizations that do things that are in harmony with this idea.  I think it is critical that we find a way to work together with those groups.  If you have connections with any such groups we should build on that.

Markus:                Educause is on the invite list already :-), but I do not personally know anyone in that organization

"Rafael":              queenbee like Mark say before here u have an organizational structure that will help promote these intercultural collaboration, and a system for generating support initiatives within the group

"Rafael":              i this that OEA its important for this project

"Rafael":              http://www.oas.org/

"Rafael":              i know Mr. Paldao he is the director of technology

Rich:      A good group to invite Rafael

"Rafael":              ok

Markus:                yes...that and other governmental agencies that promote international or intercultural initiatives are important to invite.

Rich:      I think getting representatives of these groups to the Summit would be an important first step

"Rafael":              i ll work on that

Markus:                Is it clear what the primary goal(s) of the IEA are....and if so maybe this is a good time to move on to agenda item 2 > Summit Goals

"Rafael":              ok

Rich:      yes, let's move on

queenbee:          yes and specifics about it's relationship to the real world meeting?

Markus:                The Summit is timed to overlap with a conference presentation at the SIETAR conference in Austin, TX on November 21 (friday)...

Markus:                (to Rich) please throw up the SIETAR link

Rich:      k

Rich:      http://www.sietarusa.org/

Rich:      The actual timetable of events to occur during the live linkup is yet to be determined

Markus:                SIETAR is a worldwide organization Society for Intercultural Education Training and Research.  The conference in Texas is an arm of that organization SIETAR USA

Rich:      but we will have approx 50 minutes of linkup time to utilize between the virtual and the 'real' conference

Markus:                The organization has strong support for intercultural initiatives from many significant corporations and foundations.

queenbee:          So Markus what is your involvement with SIETAR?

Markus:                This is just one group that if inspired, could lend support to IEA initiatives as they develop

Markus:                I have no direct affiliation with SIETAR

Markus:                they simply are a group we feel could help facilitate reasons why our work here is important to education and the relationships in a global society

queenbee:          thanks

Rich:      We put forward an application to present at the SIETAR conference titled "MUVE-ing Between Worlds”:  Fostering intercultural connections, collaborations, and communities; technology and its role in educating a global society.

Markus:                This is central to the reasons why I came to AWEDU in the first place....

Markus:                I do think this type of environment has strong and valuable purpose in helping educators and students think and grow in a more global sense

Rich:      and therefore the Summit should follow a similar theme to that of the SIETAR presentation

Markus:                Our thinking was, "What a powerful opportunity for many meaningful collaborations could arise from developing such a network.

queenbee:          So would you like some of us to provide you with examples of international collabs so far in here?

Rich:      that would be good, we have to determine the sequence of events during the summit and provide examples to the assembled delegates

Markus:                Some networks like this already exist....our goal is to also show the additional benefits a tool like this could bring to such efforts

Rich:      James Burke has agreed to keynote, although he is filming on location at the time of the conference

Rich:      which presents us with an interesting technical challenge

Markus:                Chris Dede has also talked about becoming involved and would consider speak at a future IEA event

Rich:      we're going to have to bow out shortly to catch the shops

Markus:                as well, I have made contact with a couple other leaders in this area (intercultural collaboration) that would like to become vocal supporters of this effort

Rich:      So we have a 3 hour summit, with a keynote arranged and a 50 minute live hookup at the end, the rest remains open to planning

Markus:                It seems that most critical is establishing a relationship with organizations that have already developed networks that can be integrated and enabled in using 3D technology

Markus:                I won't dance around it say that my function here is to support the use of this technology....I know we all have some reservations about the fact that in doing so it seems to be we work as marketing agents for AW, but that is truly not my motivation

vetunimi:               hello

Rich:      We have also created spaces here on Unite for both delegates and existing AWEDU participants to display their work

Markus:                Hi Cinzia

Rich:      Hi CInzia :)

vetunimi:               hi markus and rich

Zola:      Hello, Cinzia

"Rafael":              so we have more than an hour left Mark

Markus:                Well...I don't want to make the meeting too long, but we will meet here again next week at the same time 11am EST / 1pm VRT

Rich:      So the goals of the summit seem clear, we have to determine the exact sequence of events for the summit itself and the people who wish to speak

"Rafael":              no problem

Rich:      yes, we need to go soon i'm afraid

vetunimi:               same day?

Rich:      same day, same place, same time :)

Markus:                We also hope that as leaders we can all work to recruit people to attend....especially in terms of our international connections and connections with groups that would be good partners

vetunimi:               yes i had some work prolems unfortunately but actually I thought it was starting at 6 pm gmt +1

Markus:                please email me any invites that you would like sent out...or information about groups you feel I should contact directly.

vetunimi:               it's alright

vetunimi:               I am not good with time zones

Rich:      we will send out chat logs of the meetings anyways :)

Rich:      ot post them on the site Markus ?

Markus:                next week we would like to talk directly about the plan for the day of the Summit and roles that we can play.

Markus:                not every Tuesday...hopefully we can get this planned out in 2-3 meetings

vetunimi:               can you meet wednesday next time

vetunimi:               yes

Rich:      I have to go for now I’m afraid, please let me know anything i miss :)

Markus:                We could make it Wednesday next time, but it is likely that regardless, people are going to have conflicts.  We will post not only the meeting logs, but also individual chats we have with others about the Summit and IEA
